Black and Huber Win First US Open Title
2008 Bank of the West Classic double champions Cara Black and Liezel Huber defeated Lisa Raymond and Samantha Stosur 6-3, 7-6 to win their first US Open title and the fourth Grand Slam title overall for the World’s current No. 1 ranked team.
The two have also won Grand Slam titles at Wimbledon (2005, 2007) and at the Australian Open (2007). They did not drop a set during their 2008 US Open run.
Black and Huber entered the US Open as the most dominant team on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour winning seven doubles titles together in 2008 including the Bank of the West Classic.
Huber, a native of South Africa, became a US citizen in 2007, a day she calls the proudest of her life. Immediately after the victory she told the stadium crowd that this was her second most memorable moment.
“I am the proudest American right now, and this is my second proudest day for sure,” Huber said.
The US Open title was the second of the fortnight for Black who also captured the mixed doubles title with partner Leander Paes. The win was bitter sweet for Black who defeated Huber and her partner Jamie Murray 7-6 (6), 6-4.
“The mixed doubles final had to be one of my toughest matches, to have to play against Liezel, and I wanted to win this one just as much for her today,” Black said.
