Melanie Oudin Leads Four Seeded Players In Sunday’s Qualifying Session
STANFORD, Calif. (www.BankOfTheWestClassic.com) – Melanie Oudin outlasted fellow American Shenay Perry 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 in singles qualifying action on Sunday afternoon, highlighting the second day of competition at the 2009 Bank of the West Classic.
Oudin, the 17-year old from Marietta, Ga., survived a three-setter against Perry one day after easily dispatching of Tatiana Poutchek 6-0, 6-2. The No. 3 seed in this weekend’s qualifying draw, Oudin made headlines earlier this summer when she reached the fourth round of Wimbledon thanks to a 6-7 (8), 7-5, 6-2 upset of then-No. 6 Jelena Jankovic.
Oudin was one of four seeded players in the qualifying draw to advance, along with No. 5 Alla Kudryavtseva (Russia), No. 6 Alexa Glatch (USA) and No. 8 Yung-Jan Chan (Taipei).
Former Stanford standout and 1997 NCAA singles champion Lilia Osterloh won her second match of the qualifying session, cruising past Austria’s Olivia Rogowska 6-4, 6-2. Osterloh faces Glatch on Monday morning.
Meanwhile, incoming Stanford freshman Stacy Tan's impressive qualifying run came to an end with a 6-4, 6-4 loss to Yung-Jan Chan in the second round. A native of Lakewood, Calif., Tan posted the biggest upset of the qualifying round when she routed Nicole Vaidisova of the Czech Republic 6-2, 6-1 on Saturday afternoon. Tan, a four-year letterwinner from Lakewood High School who has been ranked in the top-five among Southern California junior 18 players, surrendered only three games to Vaidisova, a tour veteran who has been ranked as high as No. 7 in the world during her career.
The four singles qualifying matches will be played Monday at 10 a.m.
