Player Quotes July 28th
Agnieszka Radwanska
“Well, it’s always difficult during your first tournament on the hard court. I thought I was playing a lot better, maybe not so much in the beginning but my second serve was also better.”
“On one side, she knows the courts and has been more prepared for the match. But on the other hand, she can possibly be a little more tired.”
Samantha Stosur
“Playing such a good first set probably helped me get through the second set. I think she probably tried to play a little more aggressive in the second set, as she had nothing to lose after dropping the first set. She kept a good attitude throughout the whole thing and that probably kept her in the match. But I was able to hold my break points and when I did get an opportunity to break her serve, I was able to do that.”
“It’s not like I have changed anything dramatically overnight. It’s just a combination of everything that I have been doing over the past few years and now it’s all coming together. Once you produce some good results, it instills more belief. But I haven’t changed anything in my game. I have still been working on the same things, just getting better at them. It has been important to staying consistent, week in and week out.”
“The high ranking (No. 5) feels good. It was a goal for me to get to No. 10, and I was kind of close to reaching that even though it took me a few months. Once I got to that point, all of a sudden I moved up to No. 5. To have another big jump like that so soon is really pleasing. There definitely is a lot of hard work to be done in the future if I want to stay there or try and get better. But it is nice to walk into a tournament and be the No. 1 seed or top-five in the World. It’s a good feeling and something I have wanted to get to my whole life
Yanina Wickmayer
“Dominika is a tough player and she is a fighter. Today was a good match for me but I’m really happy with the way I played. I think I played the right way on court. I served really well and mentally I was strong so I am happy about this match.”
“I’m very happy to be still be playing and it feels good to have two hard court matches completed. It’s a good start for me and I feel good on court, so I’m going to try and keep this up.”
Elena Dementieva
“It’s never easy to play after a layoff of two weeks without competition, so it took me awhile to get into the game. Kimiko was playing very hard and flat, and I can’t remember the last time I played against someone with that style of game. We had never played before. It’s pretty amazing how well she is playing and she is in great shape. She is very quick and knows how to use her speed, so I was trying to play deep enough and not go flat with her.”
“I think sometimes it is good to play three sets and go through some difficult moments like that. It was a good fight. Maybe I wasn’t playing at my best, but I was fighting and trying to find a way to win. I am glad I could do it.”
“It is pretty amazing I have been able to play in every Grand Slam in my career. That (2010 Wimbledon) was the only Slam I was not able to play and it was really unfortunate. I think it has been great to have that consistency during my whole career.”
